About Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the nose’s appearance and improve its function. It can be used to address various concerns, such as reducing a dorsal hump, addressing asymmetry, reducing the nostrils, and refining the nose tip. Dr. Dolen may also address functional issues such as obstructed breathing due to a deviated septum. No matter what each patient’s ideal nose looks like, Dr. Dolen can help them achieve their desired look.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

There are many benefits to receiving a rhinoplasty, including:

  • Improved Facial Balance: Rhinoplasty can create a more balanced, proportional appearance by adjusting the size and shape of the nose.
  • Enhanced Confidence: Many patients report an improvement in self-esteem, leading to an improved quality of life.
  • Improved Breathing: Many individuals receive rhinoplasties to help alleviate functional concerns, enhancing their airflow and comfort when breathing.
  • Tip Refinement: Altering the nasal tip can address concerns related to size, shape, or angle, offering a more aesthetically desirable profile.
  • Long-Lasting Results: Unlike non-surgical alternatives, a surgical rhinoplasty can yield long-lasting results that you can enjoy for many years to come.

Preparation

Dr. Dolen will provide each patient with personalized preparation instructions during their personal consultation. Patients should follow any instructions given, as proper preparation is essential for a successful rhinoplasty. Patients may need to undergo an examination or blood testing to ensure they are in good health for their procedure. Several weeks before the procedure, the use of certain medications or supplements should be discontinued, particularly those with blood-thinning properties. If you smoke, you should stop at least 2 months before your procedure. You must also stop drinking alcohol for 2 weeks before your treatment. We ask that all patients arrange for transportation home and ask a trusted adult to care for them for the first 24-48 hours after their procedure.

Treatment Process

To begin your treatment, we will cleanse your skin and administer anesthesia. Dr. Dolen will perform a closed or open rhinoplasty depending on your aesthetic goals. A closed rhinoplasty means that any incisions or sutures are placed inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scarring. This technique is often reserved for minor corrections or adjustments. An open rhinoplasty is performed by making incisions and pulling the skin back to reveal the underlying structures. It also leaves minimal scarring on the columella. (2)

After making incisions, Dr. Dolen will make adjustments to the underlying structure and cartilage of the nose. This may include modifying the bone, cartilage, and other nasal structures, in addition to reshaping the soft tissue and nose tip. If needed, cartilage grafting may be utilized to reshape or restructure the nose. Cartilage grafts can be harvested from the ears, septum, or ribs. (3) If necessary, Dr. Dolen may perform a septoplasty during the same procedure to correct functional issues.

After making adjustments to the nose, Dr. Dolen will close the incisions. The duration of each rhinoplasty can vary depending on the patient’s personalized treatment plan, and each patient can expect their procedure to last approximately 2-4 hours.

Recovery

Rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning that each individual will be released home after treatment. Patients can expect swelling, bruising, or redness in the treatment area, but these effects are temporary and will dissipate on their own. If you experience any tenderness or discomfort, you can alleviate it with a cold compress and/or over-the-counter medication. Dr. Dolen may place a splint on each patient’s nose to protect and maintain its new structure during the initial healing process.

Temporary breathing obstruction may occur while wearing the splint. Although most patients can return to work or other social activities within 1-2 weeks, you will likely need to avoid strenuous physical activities for several weeks. If you wear glasses, we may ask you to temporarily switch to contacts. Dr. Dolen will also ask you to make regular follow-up appointments so he can monitor your progress and ensure your nose is healing correctly.

Results

Patients may notice an immediate difference following their procedure, but the full results of their rhinoplasty will become more apparent as any residual swelling subsides. Patients can expect to see a natural-looking enhancement in the shape and profile of their nose in addition to a more proportional facial balance. Patients who have functional corrections or a septoplasty often experience significant improvements in breathing. Rhinoplasty results are long-lasting with high patient satisfaction rates.

Cost of Rhinoplasty in the Greater Chicago Area

The cost of each rhinoplasty can depend on several factors, as each patient’s procedure is tailored to address their individual concerns. Dr. Dolen will provide the full cost of each patient’s rhinoplasty during their consultation once a treatment plan has been established.
